OpenAir members XiaoYu Wu and Matt Parker hosted a mini hack with an assortment of students at the University of Waterloo, including the UW Energy Network and the Impact Alliance. At the event, XiaoYu and Matt described the OpenAir Cyan Decarbonizer and explained how it works, and provided materials and instructions on how to assemble them.

The group was joined remotely by Dahl Winters, the inventor of Cyan, who spoke with the class about her motivation for creating it and hopes for the future. In total, participating students build 10 Cyans.

The students also learned a lot about carbon removal in general and the role it plays as one of many necessary approaches to addressing the climate crisis. This is the first of many such events of this type from OpenAir. If you’re interested in having a similar session at your school or organization, please reach out to us – we’d be happy to speak with you about it!
