ACTION: Call your New York State Legislators to co-sponsor S5450/A777, the New York Carbon City Property Tax Abatement Act!

S5450/A777 is state legislation that would establish a property tax abatement (PTA) to incentivize building integrated technologies that remove, capture and utilize carbon within New York City. This first of kind legislation has been introduced in both the NYS Assembly and State Senate, and with your help could become law by early June. 1. Introduce yourself

“ Hello, my name is [your name] and I’m a resident of [your city or town] in Senator/Assemblymember________’s district.”

2. Say what you are calling about:

“As a constituent I am calling to urge Senator/Assemblymember______ to co-sponsor the Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act, or SB 308. 

“This is new legislation that was introduced by Senator Robert Jackson, and Assemblymember Bobby Carroll. 

NOTE: The person who answered the call might ask for your email and for you to restate the bill name or number at this point. 

3. Briefly explain why you think this bill deserves their support. 

You can state this very briefly in your own language, based on why you think the bill should be made into law. But here are a few key points that are important that you can use:

  • Climate scientists agree that carbon dioxide removal is a critical piece of solving the climate crisis, along with clean energy.
  • New York City should lead on carbontech now, because it will help our city meet its climate commitments, such as Local Law 97
  • New York City can build a world class carbontech sector, creating jobs and opportunities in the five boroughs.
  • The bill will create a property tax abatement to incentivize carbontech technologies in buildings in New York City, and is modeled after successful tax abatement programs for solar, green roofs and batteries.
